I’ve been searching high & low for floral design classes and workshops focusing on Sympathy Designs. Wow, this has not been an easy project! I think our industry could use a few more classes and workshops focusing on this type of design, it’s wanted and needed!
These are the classes and workshops that I was able to find so far… Please keep in mind that most of them are only taught once per year and usually during the winter season, I would suggest contacting these schools/workshops directly to get their information for upcoming classes.
Flower School NY: Saying Goodbye with Grace and Beauty, NYC, NY
Saying Goodbye with Grace and Beauty’ is a workshop focused on celebrating and honoring the recently deceased through floral designs, with considerations for appropriateness, logistics, and beauty in comforting the bereaved. The seminar will be taught by Lewis Miller of LMD Lewis Miller Design and will be hosted by Lewis at his downtown studio.

In this class you will learn how to create sympathy pieces that are not your standard funeral pieces. Students will create a lush European Garden Style casket cover then turn this into contemporary linear arrangement suitable for memorial services and a wreath using non-traditional choice flowers and foliages. Students will also learn how to incorporate ribbons and items to uniquely personalize sympathy designs.
Orange County Floral Design School: Funeral Floral Design Class, Santa Ana, CA
In this class students will learn the fundamentals of designing funeral and sympathy flower arrangements. In this class we will also focus on international and patriotic funeral designs, as well as cultural and traditional funeral arrangements. We will incorporate colors and designs for various countries and cultures. We will work on different design and shape such as spray on easel, or easel arrangement, wreath, heart ( open or closed), arrangement, casket pieces for open or closed casket, ribbon and banner making we also cover traditional blanket and patriotic flag.
